Bike Month Events Highlights

June is Bike Month in Vancouver (check out the calendar). Here's some highlights that I'm planning to be at. I'll be without the camera, but will have DVDs:

MC3 Performance Ride
Meet at the Gazebo, nr. Science World
Friday, 8 June, 6:30pm ride 7.38pm
Join the Margaret Charles Chopper Collective (MC3) on a fun tour of the city stopping for live performances along the way.

World Naked Bike Ride
Sunset Beach (corner of Beach and Bute)
11am bodypainting until 1pm then ride!
If you've seen the movie, you'll know what this is about. Strip off, and ride through the city en masse. "We're not blocking traffic, we're naked!"

Stanley Park Bike Fest
Saturday, 16th June, 12am-4pm
When I asked Richard Campbell of BEST for a highlight of the fest this is one of the first he mentioned. I confess I haven't been to the Stanley Park Bike Fest before so this year I plan to aright that. Four hours of events with kids' rides/races, freak bikes, biker's BBQ in the splendid setting of Stanley Park.

Commercial Drive (Car-Free) Festival
Sunday, 17 June, noon
Several blocks are shut down for a mega street party, with dancing, loads of stalls, and a ton of freak bikes in Vancouver's East side. Shame that it only happens for a few hours a year.

2007 Bikeway Openings

Dunsmuir/Melville Bike Route Opening (see map)
Tuesday, 19 June, 4-6pm

49th Avenue Bike Route Opening (See map)
Tisdall Park, 49th Ave. near Ash
Thursday, 21 June, 4pm-6pm.

4th Avenue Bike Route Opening
Jericho Beach Park (at 4th Ave.)
Wednesday, 27 June, 4pm-6pm

Bike openings are usually pretty low-key events, but they do offer a rare opportunity to tell city staff and politicos what you think of bike facilities in an informal setting. Free cake and coffee, freebies (bells and t-shirts last year), prizes, and a ribbon cutting ceremony help create a sense of celebration. All bikers are welcomed...

BEST's Pancake Breakfast.
Wednesday, 27 June, 7:30am-9:00am
Free breakfast with biker friends. Not a bad way to start the day, if you can get up that early. Details

Critical Mass Ride
Friday, 29 June, 5.30pm
Meet outside the Vancouver Art Gallery
Always the biggest, most festive ride of the year. Last year there were around 1,800 riders.

East Van Bike Polo
Just like the horse game except played with bikes, mallets made from sawn-off ski poles with pvc pipe heads, and a hockey ball. Ongoing throughout Bike Month (and rest of the year).
